Why branding sets your price level

Two businesses do the same job to the same standard. One charges more and still has a waiting list. The difference is rarely skill. It’s how they look.

People guess your price before you tell them

Think of the last restaurant, hotel or builder you looked up. Before you saw a price, you’d put them in a bracket: cheap, mid-range or premium. You got there from the logo, the photos and the website.

Your customers do the same to you. By the time they ask for a quote, they have a number in mind. Quote above it and you look expensive. Quote in line with it and you look fair. Same price, different reaction.

Your brand sets the number in someone’s head before your quote arrives.

A weak brand attracts price shoppers

Look like the budget option and you’ll hear from people who want the budget option. They compare on price, ask for a discount and leave for a few pounds.

A confident, considered brand brings people who have already decided they want a proper job. They choose on trust, not price.

If most of your enquiries are price shoppers, that’s one of the six signs it’s time to rebrand.

It’s about matching, not looking expensive

A good brand for a plumber looks nothing like a good brand for a law firm. Yours should look like the level you work at. When it does:

  • Fewer people question your prices.
  • You win more of the jobs you want.
  • Recommendations stick. When someone looks you up, what they find backs up what they were told.

Three ways to raise your price level

  1. Be consistent. One logo, one set of colours, one set of fonts, everywhere. It costs very little.
  2. Show your best work properly. If your work is better than your photos, fix the photos.
  3. Fix the first thing people see. Usually the website or the van. Start there, not with the letterhead.

Not sure whether that means a new logo or the whole identity? Logo or brand identity explains the difference.

Is branding worth paying for?

A stronger brand that lets you charge a bit more on every job, or stops you discounting, earns its cost back. We can’t promise a figure, because every business is different.

“Exceptional attention to detail, strong communication throughout, and a final design that really elevates our brand presence.”
